HISTORY OF THE MENTORSHIP PROGRAM
In 2007, an idea, initiated by Maggie Emmett, was supported by Convenor, Gaetano Aiello and the Board of Management to create a mentoring opportunity within our community. The Board decided to institute a mentorship program. At first, it was known as the PROMISING POETS PROGRAM, but was changed in 2009 to the MENTORSHIP PROGRAM.
Each year the two editors of the Friendly Street Reader select six poets to be mentored by a poet of their choice from our community of poets. They set goals between them and work out the best means by which those goals can be achieved. They might work on editing skills, publication development, performance skills or anything else they decide as their focus. The hope is that skills will be shared and both poets will benefit from this artistic and cooperative relationship.
As well as working during the following year with their Mentor, Friendly Street Poets offers these poets performance opportunities in a variety of public spaces e.g. Senior Citizen Villages; Community Festivals & even the Royal Adelaide Show. They also are given a Guest Readership in December at the end of their mentorship year.
This program is possible through the generousity and skill offered by the Mentors in this voluntary work.
